PRAGUE – Czech President Miloš Zeman yesterday weighed in on the U.S. presidential election by endorsing controversial Republican nominee Donald Trump. according to international media.
Agreeing with Trump’s stance on immigration and his affection for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the increasingly populist Czech President now stands in contrast to Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, who favors the democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.
“I’d vote for Donald Trump if I were a US citizen,” Zeman said, quoted by the Dnes Czech daily.
Zeman’s nationalist rhetoric has become increasingly hostile in recent months, calling for a complete ban on incoming refugees, and encouraging Czech’s to arm themselves against a radical Islamic threat that has yet to rear its head in the otherwise peaceful Central European country.
“I really think that citizens should arm themselves against terrorists. And I honestly admit that I changed my mind, because previously I was against [citizens] having too many weapons. After these attacks, I don’t think so [anymore],” he said in an interview last month.
Zeman in his profession of admiration for the Russian President joins the likes of Hungary’s anti-migrant right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban. He is also the first regional leader to officially endorse a U.S. presidential candidate.
