PRAGUE – The Czech Republic earned its first gold medal of the Rio Olympics yesterday after Lukáš Krpálek won it all in judo, which was in itself a milestone for the country as it had previously never recorded a medal in the sport.

Krpálek struck gold in the under-100kg division, throwing Elmar Gasimov of Azerbaijan for the maximum ippon in the final match with an inner reap technique before the two shared a sporting hug and soaked up the fans’ acclaim in the Carioca 2 arena together, Agence France Presse reported.

The win marks the Czech Republic’s second medal of the 2016 Olympics thus far after Jiri Prskavec took home the bronze in the kayak K1 event.
